As the Millers beat Barnsley 2-1 to kick off life in the New York Stadium on Saturday, boss Steve Evans says he'll never forget it.

Speaking to the clubs website over the weekend, the manager thanked the fans, the chairman and everyone involved for making the day so special.

"The day was fantastic from start to finish and everyone who was there will always remember it. The New York Stadium, wow, is the only word I could think of and I join everyone in thanking our chairman Tony Stewart who has helped design and of course fund it completely, incredible.

"We played a decent Barnsley team and they have some talented players but infact it could and should have been more with a much bigger winning margin. There is still a lot of work to be done but we will get it done! Our squad that I have put in place is very talented.

"It would be unfair of me to single out any individual player such was the team performance. It was extra special to win the first match ever played at the New York Stadium and the atmosphere generated by our supporters was awesome, a big thank you to all of them.

"After the match I heard several of our new signings discussing the support and saying it was brilliant to play for them. I have always maintained that we all need to be pulling in the same direction. Only by being together can we bring the success Rotherham United needs and deserves."

Goals from David Noble and Kayode Odejayi meant the Millers completed a hat-trick of pre-season wins ahead of their game with Doncaster on Tuesday evening.
