Adams delighted with Ross County shock

Ross County boss Derek Adams could not hide his delight as his First Division giant-killers claimed another Clydesdale Bank Premier League scalp by beating St Mirren on penalties in the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

Two penalty saves by County goalkeeper Michael McGovern to deny Lee Mair and John Potter proved key as last season's Scottish Cup finalists, who defeated Hibernian and Celtic on their way to Hampden, booked their place in the third round after the game finished 3-3 after 120 minutes.

The County manager said, "They're a group of players who never cease to surprise me, they're a terrific bunch to work with. This is the best performance that we've ever had, and it overcomes anything from last season. The way they fought, the way they passed the ball and created chances - they never knew when they were beaten."

St Mirren manager Danny Lennon said, "It's a long journey, a long night, and to go away empty handed is difficult to take. We got ourselves into a very good position just before half-time, but what was disappointing was that every time we attacked I felt we looked vulnerable on the counter.

"We were in two very good positions coming back, we got a good reaction after County's second goal and at the start of extra-time, but we didn't hold on very long.

"Take nothing away from County, they played some very entertaining football, they stretched us in the wider areas, had a bit of quality and they break quickly."
