Late Peter Vincenti winner lifts Rochdale

Peter Vincenti's winner five minutes from time ensured Rochdale's impressive start to the season continued with a 2-1 victory at home to Scunthorpe.

Murray Wallace looked to have rescued a point for the visitors when he cancelled out Joe Bunney's opener but Vincenti's goal lifted Rochdale up to fifth in the table.

Scunthorpe were offered a good chance in the opening minutes when Dale defender Oliver Lancashire's poor header fell short of goalkeeper Josh Lillis and released striker Tom Hooper for a one-on-one opportunity but he shot straight at Lillis.

The visitors went close again when Gary McSheffrey's cross towards the back post was met by Paddy Madden but he headed narrowly wide.

Rochdale enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half but were unable to open up a well-drilled Iron backline as Mark Robins' men denied them so much as a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes.

Two minutes into the second half Scunthorpe hit the woodwork when McSheffrey's cross was flicked on by Kevin van Veen for Madden to smash against the crossbar from a tight angle.

The home side's first shot on target produced the opening goal in the 67th minute when substitute Bunney collected a Vincenti pass on the edge of the area and rifled a firm drive past Scunthorpe goalkeeper Luke Daniels.

Wallace levelled when he headed home McSheffrey's corner seven minutes later but the winning goal arrived in the 85th minute when Tom Kennedy's cross from the left was turned into the roof of the net by Vincenti.
