Dale miss out on top three

Rochdale missed the chance to move into League Two's top three after being held to a 1-1 draw by fellow promotion hopefuls Burton at Spotland.

The home side showed more ambition throughout and went close early on when striker Scott Hogan raced past Ian Sharps only to be denied by goalkeeper Rob Lainton.

In a first half of few chances Brewers striker Gary Alexander headed a Phil Edwards cross wide of the post on the half-hour mark.

Burton took the lead against the run of play in the 34th minute when Damien McCrory's corner was met by Sharps. Dale stopper Josh Lillis could only parry the defender's header to Zeli Ismail, who hammered a shot inside the near post.

The home side should have levelled before the break when Ian Henderson met Michael Rose's free-kick but his header was straight at Lainton.

Dale levelled in the 66th minute when Lainton dropped a clanger, allowing a tame shot from substitute George Donnelly to slip through his hands and over the goalline.

Hogan almost won it for Dale when he met Rose's free-kick but Lainton pushed his header over the crossbar to secure a point for the Brewers.
