Latics down Dale

Oldham took all three points in the Greater Manchester derby with a comfortable 3-0 win over Rochdale at Spotland.

A double from Daniel Johnson either side of Jonathan Forte's penalty sealed victory for Lee Johnson's men and lifted the Latics into the play-off places.

Jack Muldoon wasted an early chance when he ghosted in behind the Oldham defence but he delivered a pass behind Ian Henderson. Scott Tanser's low cross was then deflected into Matt Lund's run but he was unable to control his header.

Having dealt with Rochdale's early advances, the visitors grabbed the lead in the 24th minute. Danny Philliskirk's clever pass caught the Dale defence square and sent Johnson through on goal. Conrad Logan raced off his line to block Johnson's first effort but the rebound ran kindly for the on-loan Aston Villa midfielder and he slipped the ball into the unguarded net.

Mike Jones was close to adding a second soon afterwards but saw his shot beaten away by Logan.

The closest Rochdale came to scoring in the first half came when Jamie Allen sent vicious volley narrowly wide of debutant Paddy Kenny's upright.

Reuben Noble-Lazarus' side-footed effort forced Kenny into a save at full stretch on the hour mark but the Latics extended their lead in the 72nd minute. Jack O'Connell pulled Philliskirk down in the area and Forte converted his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Philliskirk then teed up Johnson for his second goal of the afternoon with 10 minutes remaining to round off the scoring.
