Coventry share spoils with Rochdale as Joe Cole makes Sky Blues bow

Joe Cole was unable to provide the spark Coventry needed as the Sky Blues were held to a goalless draw at Rochdale.

Making his maiden appearance for Tony Mowbray's men since joining on loan from Aston Villa, 33-year-old Cole played just short of an hour of the League One clash at Spotland in a game big on chances but short of a quality finish from either side.

Adam Armstrong saw an early effort blocked by Dale stopper Josh Lillis but the home side were stronger in the opening 25 minutes, Donal McDermott volleying the best chance of the half wide of the upright after racing on to Ian Henderson's header while Matty Lund warmed the hands of City keeper Reice Charles-Cook with a stinging 25-yard drive.

Cole showed a couple of flashes of quality towards the end of the half as Coventry grew into the game, the former England international shooting narrowly wide from the edge of the area after a weaving run towards goal.

After the break Charles-Cook pulled off fine saves to deny Joe Bunney and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, while Lillis at the other end frustrated Armstrong and Ryan Kent.
