Parkin bids to keep Gilks

Rochdale manager Steve Parkin insists he will not be letting highly-rated goalkeeper Matt Gilks leave Spotland on the cheap in the summer.

Two Premiership clubs have been linked with the 22-year-old but Parkin thinks the keeper would enhance his long-term career prospects by spending at least one more season with Dale.

"Matt Gilks is developing into an outstanding keeper, though he's not there yet and I hope he continues his development with us," he said.

"It's his decision if he wants to stay with us now, but whoever decides to get involved in transfer talks with him will have to pay a bob or too.

"He's been brought through the football club and we have offered him a decent new contract.

"I think deep down he'd like to stay because there are a lot of players here at the club who are his age developing into a group of lads who the club can be very proud of."
