Hill has faith in Dale skipper
The 32-year-old midfielder has become Dale's record appearance holder since rejoining the club in 2004.
And Hill is backing him to use his experience and quality to guide Dale's youngsters around the field in the coming months.
Hill told the Rochdale Observer: "Gary is a leader on the pitch and a key player for us.
"We've got to have him fighting fit for the season, and he knows he's got to be patient with the young players.
"That's where his leadership skills will really come to the fore."
