"Dagenham made it difficult for us, as they always do," said Hill. "They have a specific style of play and without being disrespectful they are very direct with good players in the system and it works for them.
"It makes it ugly at times, but what added to that ugliness was the state of our pitch which is in no way conducive to the type of football we want to play.
"That's not having a go at the groundsman, it's just typical of the weather we've got and the amount of games that have been played on it, especially the rugby games over recent weeks.
"We looked at it at the start of the season and thought we have a great surface there for the whole season, but unfortunately we have had a ridiculous winter and that has taken its toll."
