Rochdale manager Keith Hill has captured Wigan Athletic teenager Lewis Montrose on loan until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old is a regular in the Premier League side's reserve team and came on as a substitute in the Carling Cup defeat at Crewe Alexandra last season.
Hill told Dale's official website: "He's a utility player that I wanted to recruit as an apprentice when I first took over.
"He started at Bolton Wanderers and then went to Wigan on a scholarship and I've kept my eye firmly on him ever since.
"He can play in central defence or in central midfield, similar to Chris Basham.
"We'll be giving him his opportunity as all he's doing at Wigan at the moment is playing reserve team football and they run out shortly."
