Six injured in violence ahead of Sarajevo friendly
Published: 06 Oct 2011 - 20:05:38
At least six people, including one policeman, were injured on Thursday in violent clashes ahead of a friendly between Croatian side Hajduk Split and Zeljeznicar of Sarajevo, local media reported.
The Dnevni Avaz daily reported in its online edition that the violence erupted when Hajduk fans entered a section of the Grbavica stadium designated for Zeljeznicar supporters.
Hooligans threw bottles, torches and stones before police managed to separate two rival groups, it added.
"Six people were injured, with preliminary examinations revealing only minor injuries," a Sarajevo hospital spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
Violence also broke out in the city where hooligans attacked three vehicles carrying visiting fans, the daily said, adding that two vehicles were set on fire.
Local media also reported that gunshots were heard around the stadium.
The match, due to be played to mark Zeljeznicar's 90th anniversary, was eventually postponed.
