Walters to lead Ireland attack against Germany

Stoke striker Jon Walters has been given the role of leading the Republic of Ireland's attack in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Germany after captain Robbie Keane was sidelined with an Achilles injury.

LA Galaxy forward Keane was ruled out of the Group C showdown in Dublin after aggravating a long-standing Achilles problem earlier in the week, so Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has opted to select Walters as his lone striker.

Walters plays in front of a five-man midfield, which is comprised of Keith Andrews, James McCarthy and Keith Fahey in central areas, with Aiden McGeady and Simon Cox on the wings.

Everton's Seamus Coleman will start at right-back against the Euro 2012 semi-finalists, with Sunderland's John O'Shea, who will captain the side in Keane's absence, moving into central defence to partner Darren O'Dea and Stephen Ward at left-back.

Republic of Ireland team to face Germany on Friday:

Kieren Westwood; Seamus Coleman, John O'Shea, Darren O'Dea, Stephen Ward; Aiden McGeady, Keith Andrews, James McCarthy, Keith Fahey, Simon Cox; Jon Walters.
