Draw in Slovakia

Keane misses chance to win it The Repubic of Ireland came to Slovakia on the back of Friday nights disasterous defeat to Russia with a point to prove. The Irish line-up was missing Kevin Doyle and Liam Lawrence, with Keith Fahey and Shane Long coming in as replacements. Both had very good games with Fahey floating in a beautiful ball in the box which broke to Sean St Ledger. The Preston defender  struck the ball well which ended in the back of the Slovakian net. This was a different Ireland and they were passing the ball around with much more purpose. Slovakia equalised from a corner when Glenn Whelan didn't pick up Slovakian defender Durica who headed powerfully in the 36th minute. The Republic rallied and Long broke down the right and whipped in a ball for Robbie Keane who missed his chance. Then just on the stroke of half-time McGeady is through on goal and fouled by Slovak keeper Mucha. The penalty is given and Keane steps up to score his 46th goal for Ireland. He hits the ball at a nice height for the keeper who saves well. Keane looks out of sorts. The second half was a quieter affair with Ireland producing some chances one in which Keane who would normally put them away but missed from a few yards out and blazes over the bar. Fahey was replaced by Keogh who had no impact on the gaem. A draw was a little unfair on Ireland but if you don't take your chances in football...............................
