Defender Paul McShane sat out the Republic of Ireland's first training session at their pre-Euro 2012 base in Montecatini.

The 26-year-old, who was drafted in as defensive cover last week and played in Saturday's 1-0 friendly victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, was rested because of a bruised heel.

His condition is to be assessed overnight in the hope that he could return on Monday.

However, Kevin Foley completed full training after shaking off a hamstring injury, while Shay Given and John O'Shea continue to make progress.

The Ireland squad flew out from Dublin on Sunday morning with midfielder Paul Green having replaced Keith Fahey after he aggravated an existing groin problem.
