FIFA call for crisis talks after World Cup play off controversy

FIFA has announced it is to call an extraordinary general meeting in which it will discuss incidents surrounding the World Cup play off matches last week.

One incident expected to be high on the agenda include Thierry Henry's handball in France's tie against the Republic of Ireland, although a replay has already been ruled out.

Other issues discussed will be the violent clashes that marred Egypt and Algeria's games and Iraq's suspension from world football.

A statement from football's world governing body said: "Due to recent events in the world of football, namely incidents at the play-offs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, match control (refereeing) and irregularities in the football betting market, the FIFA President has called an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee.

"The extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee will take place in Cape Town on 2 December 2009."

Henry broke Irish hearts by crossing for former Arsenal team mate William Gallas to score after what appeared to be a deliberate handball.

The Barcelona striker has since apologise for the incident and claimed that a replay would be the fairest solution for all concerned.

However, the French Football Federation rejected calls for a replay, despite a written request from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to submit a claim to FIFA.

The FAI also released a statement, following FIFA's admission, which said: "In relation to this evening's announcement that FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, has called an extraordinary meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee to discuss incidents at the play offs, the FAI confirmed that it heard about this meeting today through FIFA's press release.

"Should we be asked to make any contribution, the FAI would be happy to do so for the improvement of the game."
