Euro 2012: The players to look out for - Republic of Ireland - James McClean

McClean signed for Sunderland just before the start of the season on 9th August 2011.

The fee thought to be around £350,000 which looks like a snip for the tricky winger. Signed by Steve Bruce but it was Martin O’Neill who gave the winger his debut off the bench. McClean played well and Sunderland clawed back a 0-1 deficit to win the game 2-1.

McClean provided several assists and scored 5 league goals in 21 appearances. It was a great season for the youngster in the end and he collected Sunderland’s young player of the year award at the end of the campaign for his efforts.

Aiden McGeady and Damien Duff will be the two wide men expected to start for Ireland but McClean will be eager to get on the pitch this summer and show what he can do against the likes of Spain, Italy and Croatia.
