Red Star name Jankovic as new coach

Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday announced that Aleksandar Jankovic will be the club's new coach after the surprise resignation of Robert Prosinecki.

"That the club called me at such a difficult time gives me real satisfaction", Jankovic, who previously coached Red Star in the 2007-08 season, told journalists.

Prosinecki's resignation came just days before Red Star host French club Bordeaux in the first leg of their Europa League play-off round tie.

"This is a delicate moment, with the match against Bordeaux, we have a lot of work ahead of us," the new coach said.

"There is not enough time to prepare for the match... but I expect that the players will show club spirit and will understand the importance of matches in the European competition," he added.

Jankovic, who is also the coach of Serbia's national under-21 side, signed a two-year contract with Red Star.

After his playing career was cut short by injuries at 28, Jankovic, 40, has worked as an assistant coach for Bulgarian champions Levski Sofia, Belgium's KSC Lokeren -- where he also made it to head coach for several months in 2009 -- Metalurg Donetsk from Ukraine and Lokomotiv Moscow.
