SV Red Bull Salzburg 0-1 Lech Poznan: Match Report

16 December 2010 20:29
Lech second despite win Semir Stilic's first-half goal was enough for Lech Poznan to win away at Red Bull Salzburg but it was not enough to secure first place in Group A of the Europa League. Stilic gave Poznan the lead after half an hour and the Polish side made the lead hold up over the rest of the way. Poznan made it 11 points in Group A but claimed second place as Manchester City also have 11 points after a draw at Juventus. Salzburg bowed out of European action with just two points and a minus-8 goal difference in six Group A matches. Pozan had the first chance of the game but Salzburg keeper Alexander Walke was able to save Artjoms Rudnevs' free-kick after four minutes. Salzburg took control after that point but it was the visitors from Poland who took the lead after half an hour. A looping pass picked out Slawomir Peszko on the left side and he crossed into the path of Stilic and the Bosnian's shot was deflected off Ibrahim Sekagya and past Walke. The Austrians went close to getting an equaliser three minutes later but Daniel Offenbacher's shot on goal was deflected wide of the target. Salzburg looked to have levelled the scores in the 33rd minute as Lech keeper Krzysztof Kotorowski was unable to hold Gonzalo Zarate's shot and Joaquin Boghossian pounced on the loose ball and blasted home. But Uruguayan Boghossian was wrongly ruled offside and the strike, which would have given Salzburg just their second goal of the competition, was chalked off. Poznan made a substitution after just 36 minutes with Jakub Wilk coming in for Luis Henriquez. The hosts continued to have more of the chances, including Boghossian's mis-hit volley in the 44th minute from a dangerous cross by Jakob Jantscher. Neither team really dominated the game after the break though Salzburg had a bit more possession. And the hosts also missed a chance with 19 minutes to play as Boghossian's shot from 12 yards out was well held by Kotorowski. The Lech keeper was again too good four minutes later, stopping an attempt by Alan from just inside the edge of the area. Peszko was just inches from doubling the lead in the 80th minute but his left foot shot went just wide of the far right post.
