Marcelino Garcia Toral was dismissed as manager of Real Zaragoza following Saturday night's disappointing home defeat against Athletic Bilbao.

The 2-1 loss means Real have picked up just one point from their last five games, a run that prompted club president Eduardo Bandres to act.

After gaining promotion back to the top-flight last season, the La Romareda outfit have picked up just three wins this term and teeter on the fringe of the relegation places.

Bandres said: "There are arguments that explain this decision. In the world of football everything is about opinions, but results aren't, they are incontestable, and they ultimately determine the decisions that are made.

"Of the 16 official games that Real Zaragoza have played this season, we have only won three.

"The record is even more negative if one looks at the last 11 games. The statistics are very negative."
