Top 10 Champions League games ever: 3 - Real Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen
Published : 03 Oct 2012 14:52:22
Real Madrid won there ninth European Cup title, there third in five years.
A game which will be remember by all for one thing, a Zinedine Zidane wonder goal.
Madrid took the lead 9 minutes into the game, with Spanish legend Raul scoring. Leverkusen keeper Hans-Joerg Butt will regret conceding such a goal. A long throw in played by Madrid, over the Leverkusen back four saw Raul one on one. With the faintest of shots, as if Raul wasn't even trying, the ball rolled past Butt and into the net. Butt didn't have the reactions to get down quick enough and Madrid took an early lead.
Shortly after Brazilian defender Lucio headed Leverkusen level. A whipped free kick came flying into the Madrid box, and Lucio was there to hammer the header home. 14 minutes had been played and already this final had truly begun.
However, on the stroke of half time. Zidane rose to the occasion. The 75million euro man scored probably the most spectacular goal in Champions League history. 17 yards out with his weaker foot and his eyes focused dead on the ball, Zidan struck the ball on the volley and smashed it into the top corner.
Madrid have failed to win the Champions League since.
Key Player: Zinedine Zidane
With the scores level at 1-1 and the game about to venture into half-time. Zidane came alive. Madrid's star man volleyed his side in front, for their 9th European Crown. This volley was one of the greatest goals ever scored, by one of the greatest players to ever play the game.
