Six-month lay-off for Pepe

Real Madrid central defender Pepe is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury in the 3-2 victory at Valencia on Saturday.

The Portugal international landed awkwardly when he challenged for an aerial ball and had to be stretchered off just before half-time.

He underwent tests on Sunday in Madrid when the extent of the injury was confirmed.

A statement from the club read: "An MRI scan confirmed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee.

"The player will be operated on in the near future and he will be out for an estimated six months."
