Red card Pepe says sorry
22 Apr 2009 - 09:50:56
Real Madrid defender Pepe has issued an apology following his red card for violent conduct in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Getafe.
The Spanish media has condemned the Portugal international for his red card and reaction following a skirmish with Javier Casquero.
Pepe twice kicked out at the Getafe forward after conceding a penalty with the scores level at 2-2 and had to be escorted off the pitch by team-mate Iker Casillas amid angry scenes.
"I am very sad and disappointed with my attitude," said a contrite Pepe immediately following the full-time whistle.
"It was in the heat of the moment and as a human being I am entitled to make mistakes.
"But the important thing is for me to recognise my mistake. I apologise to the fans, to Real Madrid, to Casquero and to everyone else.
"I don't know what will happen now. I'm not a violent player. I've only had a few bookings this season and I hope that this is taken into account.
"But I know that I'm in the wrong and that I must be punished."
