Real Madrid edged out newly-promoted Numancia, who beat Barcelona in the opening weekend of the season, in a seven-goal thriller.
Numancia took a shock sixth-minute lead when Juan Carlos Moreno netted and, after Guti had equalised, Jose Barkero restored the visitors' advantage.
Real were level again when Higuain scored and Bernd Schuster's side seemed to be strolling to victory when Rafael van der Vaart and a Cisma Domingo own goal made it 4-2.
However, Moreno scored his second goal of the game to ensure a frantic finish, but Real hung on to take all three points.
Villarreal beat Deportivo 1-0 thanks to Santi Cazorla's 27-minute goal while Espanyol prevailed by the same scoreline against Recreativo Huelva - Luis Garcia grabbing the late winner.
Almeria and Valencia drew 2-2 at Mediterraneo Stadium with Pablo Piatti and Gonzalo Arconada on target for the hosts. However, Los Che hit back twice through Ruano Alexis and David Villa.
Real Mallorca had to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw against Osasuna. Javier Portillo scored a late equaliser for Osasuna after Aritz Aduriz had given the island side the lead.
Real Betis drew 0-0 with Getafe and it was also goalless in the game between Malaga and Athletic Bilbao.
