Real Madrid say they won't sell players to Mourinho's Chelsea

It’s often the way when a manager leaves a club for pastures new, that he’s keen to take a few of his tried and trusted players with him. With David Moyes’ move to Old Trafford for instance, there was immediate speculation that he’d seek to take Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines with him to Manchester United. Moyes left Everton on good terms however. With Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid, the parting is somewhat less amicable.

With the weekend seeing the final denouement of the Portuguese Special One’s time at the Bernabeu, attention will quickly turn to his plans for Chelsea, and the squad additions that he will seek. Back in Spain, changes will also be afoot. When the new man is in place at Madrid - thought likely to be Carlo Ancelotti if he can untangle himself from his French leave at PSG - squad additions will be made, inevitably leading to a number of players moving out of the club. Madrid however seem to be making it abundantly clear that the chances of them selling any stars to Mourinho lie somewhere between slim and ‘ninguno’.

Mourinho had been linked with the possibility of Luka Modric joining him at Chelsea, although with Mata, Hazard and Oscar already at the club, this seems a strange one, and Xabi Alonso, one of his few friends in the Madrid dressing room, was also mentioned. With the club’s apparent stance however, it seems that any bid for these players is likely to be rebuffed with short shrift.

Without doubt, it’s true to say that the relationship between club and manager was fractious towards the end of the season that Mourinho has described as ‘his worst ever.’ Although a public face of required politeness was displayed, no-one misunderstood the antipathy present. When Mourinho leaves a club, it’s often the way. It’s difficult to see Madrid’s stance therefore as anything other than a declaration of no contact between Mourinho and Real Madrid. They’re building a wall to keep him out.
