Real Madrid celebrated winning the La Liga title at the weekend by thrashing rivals Barcelona 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

Real secured a second consecutive league crown after a 2-1 win at Osasuna on Sunday and followed that up by comprehensively beating their traditional rivals in front of a delighted home crowd.

Raul, Arjen Robben, Gonzalo Higuain and Ruud van Nistelrooy were all on the mark for Real, while Thierry Henry scored a late consolation for Barca before Xaxi was sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time.

Elsewhere, Villarreal took full advantage of Barca's latest away disappointment after securing second place in the table and avoiding the need to play in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League following a 2-0 win over Recreativo Huelva.

Nihat Kahveci and Guille Franco scored the goals which secured a highest ever league finish for the Yellow Submarine.

Sevilla strengthened their grip on fourth place after Federico Fazio scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander.

Real Mallorca remain in the hunt for a UEFA Cup spot after Oscar Trejo's stoppage time winner secured a 2-1 success over relegation-plagued Osasuna.

Getafe ended their lingering relegation fears after a 4-2 win over Almeria, while Valencia did likewise after a much-needed 1-0 success against fellow strugglers Real Zaragoza.

Real Betis and Real Valladolid fought out a 1-1 draw in a mid-table battle at the ManUel Ruiz de Lopera.

Deportivo La Coruna were 1-0 winners over already relegated Levante, while fellow Segunda Division-bound side Murcia lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao.
