PSG owners deny links with Real Madrid boss Mourinho
Paris St Germain’s Qatari owners have denied reports suggesting that talks have taken place with Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho about becoming the French club’s next manager.
Both Mourinho and fellow Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, also reportedly unhappy in Spain, have been linked with joining the cash rich Parisians. Spanish daily Sport claimed earlier this week that Mourinho was preparing his departure from Madrid and that a stratospheric offer had been made to him if the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach wanted to join the Qatari revolution in Paris.
However on Thursday L’Equipe reported that Qatari Sports Investments were denying reports that any talks have taken place with Mourinho, with the French side’s sporting director Leonardo giving his public backing to Carlo Ancelotti.
Mourinho is enduring a difficult spell at Madrid, with his team third in La Liga and 11 points adrift of leaders Barcelona already. No manager has survived in the job at the Bernabeu in such circumstances, and Mourinho has enjoyed far from a tranquil tenure since taking over the Madrid hotseat over two years' ago.
His team are eight points behind local rivals Atlético ahead of this weekend’s game between the two sides. Should Madrid lose for the first time in many a year to their local rivals, that pressure would intensify.
Also feeling the pressure is Paris St Germain coach Ancelotti, whose future continues to be the subject of debate after an unconvincing start to the season. The Parisians have not adopted a particular style or cohesion since Ancelotti’s arrival almost a year ago, and are currently adrift of Olympique Lyonnais in the French title race.
This week they were also beaten by Saint-Etienne in the Coupe de la Ligue, increasing the pressure on the Italian, who spent more in the last transfer window than any manager in Europe’s top leagues.
