Mourinho: Portugal job unlikely
17 Sep 2010 - 13:54:31
Jose Mourinho has admitted he is unlikely to accept a request from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to manage the national team on an interim basis.
The FPF identified the Real Madrid coach as their leading candidate to step into the breach following the recent decision to part company with Carlos Queiroz.
They wanted Mourinho to take the reins for next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Denmark and Iceland while they sought a full-time replacement.
However, the former FC Porto, Chelsea and Internazionale coach does not believe he will have the time to take on the extra responsibility just months into his Madrid reign.
"If it were not for Real Madrid I would do it for free," he told Marca. "But if you ask me right now if I can go, I think not. I have a contract with Real Madrid.
"I do not say no, but in the natural way of things, I do not think this is the time."
The 47-year-old has previously suggested that he wants to coach the Portugal national team as his final job before retirement.
