Kaka completes Madrid move
09 Jun 2009 - 07:20:19
Kaka has promised to help Real Madrid return to the pinnacle of European football after completing his £59million transfer from AC Milan.
The Brazil midfielder interrupted his preparations for a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Wednesday to confirm he has completed the formalities of his move and is now a Madrid player.
The reported 68million euro deal - which is worth £59million by today's exchange rates - eclipses the £46.7million sterling world record sum Real paid Juventus to land Zinedine Zidane in 2001.
"I can officially say I'm a Real Madrid player," confirmed Kaka.
"My professional link with AC Milan finishes now, but my sentimental link will never end.
"Real Madrid intend to build a great team, with historic players such as Raul and (Iker) Casillas.
"We will make history again, both in Spain and Europe. I guess the sport project is very good."
Meanwhile, Kaka suggested the move was partially motivated by Milan's need to raise funds.
The 27-year-old had been with the Rossoneri for six seasons in which time he won the Champions League and Serie A titles once and was crowned World and European player of the year.
"I wanted to stay on at Milan but the world (financial) crisis affected a lot of clubs, especially those like Milan which are businesses," he added.
"So then I spoke with the Milan directors and we reached the conclusion that the best thing for everybody would be to sell.
"I've been weighing up the offer from Real Madrid a lot. It's an important project for me to continue growing in my career.
"I'm not going to Real Madrid for money, as I had other offers. But I knew I would only leave Milan to play for Real Madrid."
