France coach Raymond Domenech has suffered a major blow with the news that midfielder Lassana Diarra will miss the World Cup finals in South Africa.
The Real Madrid man had reported a stomach complaint after scaling a peak during their training base in the French Alps and, following tests, the 25-year-old has been ruled out of the tournament.
A statement on the French Football Federation's (FFA) website read: "Following the intestinal problem Lassana Diarra contracted on the glacier at Tignes, medical examinations discovered an unforeseen illness that necessitates rest for an indeterminate period.
"As a result, Lassana Diarra is out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. For the moment, the staff have not called up another player."
FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes said of Diarra's absence: "I react with great sadness because a World Cup is something terrific. Lassana is a player I like a lot.
"He could have had enormous value to the team because of his mental strength. It is dramatic that he should miss the World Cup. He will play more in the future because he is young, but I have great sorrow for him."
