De la Red backs Ronaldo

Stricken Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red believes Cristiano Ronaldo is a born winner and has praised the Portuguese winger's efforts during Wednesday's 2-0 Champions League victory over Ajax at Santiago Bernabeu.

De la Red, who suffers from a serious heart condition, has been on the sidelines for two years, but has been paying keen attention to Ronaldo's displays in the opening weeks of the season.

"Ronaldo is very impulsive and he is the first one who likes to win and also play well," he said.

"He sometimes does not realise his team-mates around him and it is normal for the public to express their discomfort but, against Ajax, I heard only applause and the team played very well."
