Casillas turns focus on league
12 Mar 2010 - 08:08:01
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas believes the players should take the blame for the club's latest Champions League failure.
The current La Liga leaders crashed out of Europe's premier competition at the last-16 stage for the sixth successive season when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lyon on Wednesday after losing the first leg in France 1-0.
Coach Manuel Pellegrini has been blamed for the latest European horror-show but Casillas thinks that is unfair, saying: "I want to apologise to the fans, but I also want them to know we will never give up.
"It would be easy to throw in the towel. The feelings amongst the dressing room, the club and the fans after the match are ones of disappointment, but we want to rid ourselves of this with the league. We want to forget about what happened with a win in Valladolid.
"At no time are we going to give up. We are eager and hopeful of winning the league, for us and for the fans. As a Madridista (Madrid fan) I would be very happy if we win the league.
"People will think that I'm just making a typical populist speech, but it's not like that, I'm saying what I feel."
