Nogues replaces Chaparro

La Liga strugglers Real Betis have sacked coach Paco Chaparro and promoted Jose Maria Nogues to take charge of first-team affairs.

Nogues had been in charge of the B team at the Seville club, but has been handed the top job after Chaparro was axed following a run of seven games without a win.

After learning of his promotion, Nogues told Radio Marca: "I am convinced that we will be able to move forward, but the reality is that Betis are not well at the moment.

"I was not expecting that at this point of the season, the team would be struggling so much.

"The quality that we have in the squad does not reflect the position that we are in. I will do whatever is necessary to get the team to react to our situation.

"I value this opportunity very much and I am grateful that the board showed confidence in a coach from Segunda B."
