Betis chief issues apology

Real Betis president Pepe Leon has issued a stirring apology to the club's fans following their relegation from the Spanish top-flight.

The Andalucian club dropped out of La Liga on a dramatic final day and Leon has hinted that major changes will be made at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera in the coming days.

"The board wants to apologise to the fans of Betis for the sporting decline the club have suffered that has led us to La Segunda," he said in a statement.

"This is despite the economic effort this season where we are all agreed that, with the team we had, we could have aspired to bigger things.

"(We want to thank) the unconditional support of the fans, who have always maintained their support for the team and, especially on the last Sunday, when they gave a true lesson of what it is to support a club.

"In a week or ten days we will have everything necessary to understand what needs to be done at the club."
