What had Twitter talking the most during the Ballon d'Or ceremony?

Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the winner of FIFA’s Ballon d’Or and if ever you needed further proof that he was the most popular footballer this evening, here it is…

Ronaldo was the most tweeted-about player throughout the whole ceremony with Twitter reaching its peak as the Real Madrid star was handed his trophy.

Messi and then of course, Neuer, followed behind the Portuguese star as the most-tweeted about footballers of the night.

As expected, many took to Twitter to congratulate Ronaldo, with 143, 000 tweets typed per minute congratulating the footballer on his third Ballon d’Or win.

Following Ronaldo’s big score, James Rodriguez Pushkas’ Goal of the Year award and Nadine Kessler’s Women’s Player of Year award, were the next most popular Ballon d’Or stories buzzing around Twitter.

Of all the congratulatory tweets, One Direction’s Niall Horan’s to Ronaldo was the most retweeted during the ceremony (must be all those Directioners).

This was followed by Real Madrid’s, Cristiano Ronaldo’s himself, Germany’s Mesut Ozil’s and FIFA’s tweets.

Interestingly, if 2014′s tweets were anything to go by , Ronaldo would’ve probably lost out to Messi. There were 54 million tweets sent about the Argentinian sent throughout last year compared to Ronaldo’s 40 million mentions on Twitter (and the 6.3 million Manuel Neuer-related tweets).
