The Spanish World Cup winner is undoubtedly the most technically gifted defensive midfidler in football.

Having played for arguably two of the biggest clubs in European football in Liverpool and Real Madrid, as well as over 100 international caps for The Spanish National Side, it is to no surprise that Xabi Alonso gets a mention in this list of elite midfielders.

The 11/12 season however, was Alonso's first league title. In his first season at Real Madrid he helped the side achieve a mass of 96 points, albeit to finish second behind FC Barcelona.

It was the third time in his carrer that he helped his team set a new club record in terms of points gathered, whilst finishing second.

EURO 2012 saw Xabi Alonso play his 100th match for Spain, and on his 100th cap against France, he scored 2 goals to send Spain into the semi-finals.

Known for his passing in football, Alonso holds a prestigious record from his time at Liverpool. He is the only player in modern-times to score consecutive goals from his own half for his club!
