Cristiano Ronaldo set a new La Liga scoring record and Real Madrid equalled the highest ever goal tally in a season as they came from behind to beat Sporting Gijon 3-1 and open a seven-point lead over Barcelona.

Ronaldo hit his 41st goal of the campaign, beating his own record of goals in a season set last year to put Real in front 2-1 in the 73rd minute after a Sergio Ramos handball saw Miguel Angel De las Cuevas put Sporting ahead from the penalty spot.

Gonzalo Higuain had equalised for Real with a header after 36 minutes.

Ronaldo finally broke Sporting's resistance after 73 minutes and following the dismissal of Roberto Canella for a second yellow card, Karim Benzema hit the third which was Real's 107th goal of the season, the same number as John Toshack's Real Madrid team in the 1989-90 season.

Barcelona face Levante later Saturday.
