Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is facing a spell on the sidelines after tests confirmed he has suffered a calf injury.

Bale was hurt during Madrid's 5-1 hammering of Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

Scans on Tuesday revealed the full extent of the injury and although the club offered no time-frame for the Wales international's return, early reports in Spain suggest he will face at least three weeks out.

"After tests carried out today on the player Gareth Bale at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with soleus muscle injury in his right leg," a Madrid statement said. "His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Bale scored the opening goal on Sunday after only seven minutes but was replaced at half-time after suffering the injury.
