Cristiano Ronaldo reaches 100 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the quickest ever footballer to score a 100 goals in La Liga, beating former record holder and fellow Madrid player Ferenc Puskas.

It has taken the Portuguese international 92 league matches to reach this number, which is an average of 1.1 goals per game. Ronaldo’s total is now 101 goals after scoring twice in Madrid’s 5-1 win against Espanyol last Saturday.

This season alone the Madrid striker has already scored 35 goals, and with 9 matches remaining he could very well be on his way to surpassing the 41 goals he scored in the 2010/11 season. The former Manchester United striker made the move to Real Madrid for 96€ million (£80m) in the summer of 2009.His first goal came in his La Liga debut on the 29th of August 2010 against Deportivo La Coruna, scoring the second goal in a 3-2 win over the Galician team. However in the entire 2009/10 season he managed to find the back of the net 26 times.

Even though CR7’s numbers are incredible, there is a thorn in his paw that goes by the name of Lionel Messi, who is on a record breaking streak, in less than a month he has become the first player to score 5 goals in a Champions League match, the highest scoring player ever in Barcelona’s history (234 goals) and last weekend he became top goal scorer in one season for Barca. Instead of being intimidated by these numbers, it’s probably not farfetched to say there’s no doubt that this just makes him all the more eager to keep the goals coming.

With both Ronaldo and Messi being currently on 35 goals each in the league, it’s surely going to be a promising race to see who wins the “Pichichi” (top goal-scorer award) this season.
