Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao has joined Real Madrid on a six-year deal for 30 million euros ($43.4m) from Benfica, both clubs announced on Tuesday.
"Real Madrid and Benfica have reached agreement over the transfer of Portuguese player Fabio Coentrao, who has signed for the club for the next six years," Real Madrid said.
The 23-year-old Portugal international was a member of the Benfica team that won the domestic league and cup double in 2009 and was also an ever-present in Portugal's 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
He becomes Real's fifth signing for the 2011-12 campaign, when he will work under his countryman, coach Jose Mourinho.
