Casillas Happy To Dodge Obstacle

Iker Casillas is relieved Real Madrid were able to overcome a potential stumbling block at Rayo Vallecano and win 2-0 to keep the pressure on Primera Division leaders Barcelona.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez made sure Los Blancos avoided a let-down following their 9-1 demolition of Granada.

"Winning is always important and it's made all the better by keeping a clean sheet," goalkeeper Casillas told his club's official website.

"It was a difficult game on a small pitch and we were solid at the back."

Casillas praised Rayo coach Paco Jemez, whose side dominated the opening half before Ronaldo scored his 36th league goal of the campaign in the 68th minute to break the deadlock.

"We struggled in the first half but in the second half we were more tuned in and better organised," the Real captain said.

"(Rayo coach) Paco's game plan is always spot on, he treats each opponent equally and that's what makes him stand out from the rest.

"They know this pitch inside out and they deserve praise for how they played.

"We didn't have as many iffy moments in the second half and were stronger and more solid.

"We were able to react in time to win the game".

Real remain in contention for the La liga title and are second in the table, four points adrift of Barca with eight games remaining.

Barca won 4-0 against Almeria on Wednesday.

"If you drop any points at this stage of the season, you might as well wave goodbye to La Liga," Casillas said.

Real host Eibar on Saturday having to do without the pivotal trio of Ronaldo, Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, all suspended this weekend.

The three players will, however, be available for next week's Champions League quarter-final first leg tie at Atletico Madrid.
