Why were Reading playing in this unusual kit at the weekend?

Reading ditched their traditional blue and white hoops for this jazzy little number when they took on Blackburn.

Normally the introduction of a new kit midway through the season would lead to hooting and howling about fans being fleeced, but this one was greeted with nothing but positivity.

That’s because it was designed by Ryan Duval, a 14-year-old Royals fan with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Ryan was the team’s mascot on the day they wore his kit, and he got to meet the players before receiving a standing ovation from the fans.

It was all the culmination of a huge community project backed by Royals skipper Jem Karacan, who announced he’d be donating his appearance fee for the match to Ryan’s school, The Avenue School.

It was a big day for Karacan too – he made his first start in 18 months.

The match finished 0-0 so Ryan didn’t get to see a goal in his big day – but at least they didn’t lose.
