Stewards disappoint McDermott

Reading manager Brian McDermott has admitted he was disappointed with West Brom's stewards after they tried to stop his players celebrating at the end of their 3-2 FA Cup fifth round replay win.

The Royals grabbed a last-gasp leveller through Brian Howard to force extra-time before Gylfi Sigurdsson struck to set up a quarter-final clash with Aston Villa.

However, there were ugly scenes at the end of the game as Jobi McAnuff and Youssouf Mulumbu clashed, with the former seeing red.

McDermott believes there was little need for the incident and pointed the finger of blame at the hosts' stewards.

He said: "We were trying to celebrate with our supporters and the stewards were making it worse.

"I have had an apology from one of the stewards, which I appreciate, but I didn't understand what happened.

"It didn't need to happen. If stewards are coming towards you, you have a problem. It was just a mess with a lot of stewards coming on the pitch. I don't know if it was necessary.

"There was so much going on and the stewards definitely over-reacted but it didn't taint the night."
