Shorey deal talks shelved
14 Feb 2008 - 15:36:26
Reading defender Nicky Shorey has put contract negotiations on hold until the summer.
Shorey has just 18 months remaining on his existing deal and the Royals were keen to sit down with the 27-year-old full-back to discuss a new long-term contract.
The England international was heavily linked with a move to West Ham in the summer transfer window and has now decided to shelve talks on a new deal.
"In all honesty I think we will look again in the summer and see what the situation is then," director of football Nick Hammond told the Reading Evening Post.
"He still has a year on his contract to run after this season."
When asked whether Shorey was waiting to discover whether the Royals would avoid relegation from the Premier League, he added: "You'd need to speak to him in that respect.
"I think he'd already made the decision (about whether to sign a new deal) at the start of this season and there's no reason why that has changed.
"The important thing now is that he performs well up until the summer and then we will speak again."
