Royals seal Armstrong deal

Reading have landed defender Chris Armstrong from Championship rivals Sheffield United.

Armstrong, 26, has joined the Royals for an initial fee of £500,000, which could rise to £800,000 depending on appearances.

The left-back has been linked with the Berkshire club throughout the summer, but manager Steve Coppell made his move after losing England defender Nicky Shorey to Aston Villa.

"Chris is an experienced player who has made more than 200 senior appearances and competed in the top-flight," director of football Nicky Hammond told the club's official website.

"We wish him the best of luck and are pleased to welcome him to the club."

Coppell added: "We have been looking to supplement the left-hand side of our squad and the signing of Chris Armstrong has given us the opportunity to do that."
