Reading director of football Nick Hammond has revealed that the Royals are hoping to land a major name in the game to increase the club's standing.
Only one new face, midfielder Kalifa Cisse, has arrived at the Madejski Stadium this summer, but Hammond is working to seal more deals.
He told the Reading Chronicle: "We would like a top, top player to come here.
"One that would make everybody stand up and say 'fantastic, what a great signing'. We are prepared to go out there and be in the market place for that in terms of finances.
"We're after a couple of players of real, genuine quality and the finances which go with that do not frighten us.
"Our league position last season has certainly improved our credibility, but the number of players who would improve us is very small.
"We could be looking at someone, but so could seven or eight other Premiership teams regarded as being bigger than us.
"That's not to say we're not fighting our corner, we are. But, after all that, they may still decide to go somewhere else and we have to accept that."
