Rodgers takes Reading reins

Brendan Rodgers has been confirmed as the new manager of Reading, after they reached agreement with Watford over his return to the Madejski Stadium.

Rodgers had only been in the hot-seat at Vicarage Road for seven months, but notified the Hornets board of his desire to rejoin Reading at the beginning of the week.

Watford have now confirmed his move back to the Berkshire club - where he helped set-up a youth academy before moving on to Chelsea in 2004 - after reaching a compensation fee in excess of £500,000.

The Northern Irishman took the Watford reins in November and helped steer them clear of relegation and into a safe mid-table berth.

"Once Brendan had confirmed his desire to discuss the opportunity and Reading had met a contractual compensation figure, we were powerless to prevent him doing so," Hornets chairman Jimmy Russo told his club's official website.

"We also had a frank and open conversation with the manager on Monday afternoon to further understand his position.

"It was at this stage he strongly reinforced his desire to talk to Reading."
