Reading thank Long for win

Reading will be thanking Shane Long after he smashed home a crucial stoppage-time penalty to secure a timely 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday.

The Championship strugglers looked set for a share of the spoils until the Irishman's intervention.

Long had opened the scoring early in the second half before Carl Fletcher grabbed an equaliser for the Pilgrims but there was still time for late drama.

Long has thanked team-mate Adam Federici, who has helped him practice his spot-kicks in training this week.

Speaking to reporters, he said: "I practice my technique in training with Feds a lot and he tells me which way he thinks I'm going to go.

"I think the straight run-up puts the keeper off. I felt confident stepping up last night and sent the keeper the wrong way."
