Nottingham Forest 2 Reading 1: Lee Camp fire is burning for England call

18 January 2010 02:00
Suddenly Nottingham Forest are breathing down the necks oftable-topping  Newcastle. The Toon Army's once daunting lead has beenslashed to two points.[LNB]Today Newcastle play third-placed West Bromwich Albion and thisForest victory  has cranked up the pressure on Chris Hughton's side. [LNB]Newcastle's match is their first of two games in hand but BillyDavies's second-placed Forest side have  the momentum. This impressivewin against Reading - who won at Liverpool in the  FA Cup three daysearlier - stretched Forest's unbeaten league run to 18  matches.  [LNB]Forest's goalkeeper Lee Camp was the star. Davies is convinced thathis No 1  should be in the England squad and claims that playing in theChampionship is  the reason why Camp is being overlooked. 'They tell methere's a better goalkeeper in the country, but I've yet to see him,'said Davies.[LNB]Welsh wizard: Earnshaw celebrates his eight goal of the season[LNB]That comment is not as far fetched as it sounds. Camp made twostunning blocks  from Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson headers and also saveda Brian Howard penalty. [LNB] 'I have played for England at every level apart from the seniors,' said Camp. 'Taking a rookie to the World Cup would be a massive gamble.' [LNB]Camp was outstanding in the second half but had very little to dobefore  half-time as the home side outclassed Reading, going 2-0 ahead.[LNB]Forest's first-half display was described by Davies as 'the bestwe've played since I've been here'. That's why Newcastle should beespecially nervous about the threat to their Championship dominance.[LNB]Discussing tonight's match at St James's Park, Davies added: 'I keeptelling  this team not to think about anybody else. We need to forgetabout who else is playing in the Championship.'[LNB]When you're in the thick of the promotion race, it's hard to forgetother teams, though. For sure, no promotion-chasing side will beignoring Forest now.[LNB]They led in the 11th minute when Chris Cohen burst forward and found himself  one-on-one with Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici. [LNB]Rather than shoot, he had the  composure and awareness to pass leftto Paul Anderson, who finished well. 'We know that we can playfootball,' said Anderson. 'But we've worked on our  battlingqualities.' [LNB] Unbeatable: Forest have gone eighteen games without losing [LNB] [LNB]Those qualities meant Reading carried on chasing shadows for the rest of the  first half. In the 41st minute. Radoslaw Majeski slipped a classy through ball  into the path of Robert Earnshaw, whose shot from 12 yards evaded Federici.[LNB]The Reading goalkeeper said: 'The standard we set in the Liverpool game needs  to be reached every time we play. But Forest are the best team in the league.' [LNB]Reading found a way back into the game when Forest left-back Nicky Shorey  fouled Jimmy Kebe, conceding a penalty, and was sent off. Camp saved Howard's  68th-minute spot-kick and 10-man Forest continued to repel everything that was  thrown at them until injury-time when Jem Karacan's cross was headed in by Kebe.[LNB]'Goalkeepers pride themselves on clean sheets,' said Camp. 'I'm bitterly disappointed. It almost feels like a defeat, having let that goal in.' [LNB]That kind of perfectionist attitude is why Forest are swatting aside all-comers  this season. Newcastle - be warned - you could be next.[LNB] Brian McDermott celebrates Cup shock by being named Reading bossAnfield curse?
