McDermott supports Mills

Reading boss Brian McDermott has backed defender Matt Mills to rebuild his relationship with the club's fans following a midweek spat during the 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.

Mills aimed a one-finger gesture at fans who had been jeering him, an action which he has since apologised unreservedly for.

McDermott told the Evening Post: "We dealt with what we had to with Matt. He's accepted everything and I'm sure he's going to go on and become a stronger and better person.

"He's got a cause now. He feels that he needs to win the fans over again after what happened. He'll do that.

"I'm sure he's got their respect for the way he's come out with a public apology. He's worn his heart on his sleeve.

"It was difficult to deal with, the last thing you want is for a player to do that. I'm really hopeful now that the fans will back him to the hilt."
