McDermott eager to start climbing

McDermott was handed a 12-month rolling contract after guiding the Royals into the fifth round of the FA Cup, and has now focused his attention on the league.

He said: "I have been here 10 years and I have played all the roles at the football club so to be appointed as manager is terrific.

"I think the chairman really wanted to feel it was the right choice and I'm now looking forward to the next 20 games in the league and as many cup games as we can get in.

"We have to attack every game that we play and we need to be ruthless in both penalty areas. If we do that we have a good shape about us and I have no doubt that we will be climbing up this league."
